Fundamentals → Level 1 → All Levels

Most zouk in Hong Kong is taught as one-off classes. You learn a move, then another move, and after a year you have a lot of moves and no foundation.

We teach a progression instead. We teach you the basic moves with variations and exits for each. Each level builds on the one before it, and you move up when you are ready rather than when a term ends.

Here is what that looks like.

Fundamentals

For: Everyone, including experienced dancers new to zouk.

Duration: 3 weeks

Prerequisite: Nothing but a positive learning mindset

By the end you will be able to:

  • Zouk timing
  • Prep on weight transfers
  • Basic on the spot
  • Basic side to side
  • Basic (forward and back)
  • Basic changing directions
  • Open stretch
  • Viradinha
  • Lateral
  • Lunges
  • Lateral into simple turn
  • Viradinha changing directions
  • Lateral from Viradinha
  • Lateral from open stretch
  • Lunges from basic
  • Lunges from lateral
  • Elastico
  • Io-Io
Students practising the basics together in a Fundamentals class

How do you know you are ready for the next level? Ask yourself: how clean is your lead? How clean are your fundamental steps?

We have a core group of dancers who have been learning and growing with us. There is no rush, and plenty of people keep coming back to Fundamentals long after they have moved up. We believe in starting with the fundamentals even if you've taken Brazilian Zouk classes in the past, because we always come back as a different dancer.

Level 1

For: Dancers who are comfortable with the basic step and can lead or follow a simple turn.

For: By invitation. Our students get priority to join these workshops.

Prerequisite: A positive attitude

Each month, we have high-level guest artists working with the Zouk Haus team to support our Brazilian Zouk journey and help us become better teachers for you. Students also have the opportunity to grow, either through workshops or privates.

We have an active IG page, so you will often hear about upcoming workshops and special events there, or our Zouk Haus team will contact you personally.

Please follow us on Instagram @zoukhaushk to stay up to date on workshops, events, and inspiration!

How the cycle works

How the class cycle works at the Zouk Haus studio

Each level runs on a 4-week cycle, and each cycle covers a set of related topics. When the cycle ends, it starts again with new material at the same level.

This means two things. You can join at any point without being lost. You can also repeat a cycle without repeating a class.

Not sure where you fit?

Tell us what you have danced before and we will point you to the right class. If you have danced zouk elsewhere, come to Fundamentals once anyway. Every school teaches the basics slightly differently, and it is easier to see where you are in person than over a message.
